I just received my Series 5 today and for the most part it’s pretty much what I expected… simple and efficient. However, I’m a little surprised at how easy it is to use and how much I like the overall design. I was a little worried after ordering the Samsung online without ever actually seeing a physical version. It is always hard to have a real sense of a product just from pictures and reviews. Just a few examples… how bright or glossy is the screen? How does the keyboard feel? How quick is it (because specs really only give you an idea of this)? The Samsung is smaller than your typical laptop, but it doesn’t feel “small”. It’s bigger than many netbooks I’ve seen and it feels solid. The keyboard is very natural and doesn’t feel small. I was instantly able to type at full speed on it. I’d also like to add that the island keys are pretty sweet. I read A LOT of reviews that complained about the track pad. Some of these were based on an earlier prototype Google used to develop the chromebooks. Others were specifically for this product. I, personally, like the track pad. It took me about 10 minutes to get used to it. What makes it different is it’s lack of buttons and clickable surface. You actually press down on the pad and can feel it ‘click’. You have to use a couple of fingers to scroll and drag items, but after minimal practice I thought it became pretty natural. I am one of those people who already does everything online, so dropping the regular OS (Windows, Ubuntu, etc.) was a major plus for me. I like the Chrome browser (and now Chrome OS) because it is always up to date with the latest features for surfing the web by keeping up with internet standards. I feel that is also very quick and easy to use.

I should let the reader know that I a very big supporter of the “new Web”, online storage, online computing, Google, and have been called an “early adopter”. That being said, this product is really for a small part of the population currently. If you don’t feel comfortable moving everything on your computer into the cloud, then the chromebooks are definitely not for you. If you already do everything online, then it’s perfect. (Side note: I feel general computing will move more and more in this direction in the future so might as well embrace it early!)

My guess though is that if you’re reading this review you’ve already debated whether or not you can go completely online. If you were like me and just concerned about the actual hardware itself, I’d like to again emphasize how much I like the feel of the Series 5. It looks sweet and I was instantly able to use it comfortably. I can’t compare it to the Acer but I don’t regret my decision at all!
